(Sarawak)

(KUCHING LIFE CARE SOCIETY)

(Academy For Silent

Following the outbreak of Covid-19, the Department of Thanatology and Counseling has initiated international academic activities in Malaysia

The Department of Thanatology and Counseling, Distinguished Professor, Tseng Haunntarng

During my professor's research sabbatical, I personally funded a trip to places like Sarawak in Malaysia and Singapore, seeking academic collaboration and establishing teaching bases for revitalizing international exchange activities in our department.

Sarawak

1- KUCHING LIFE CARE SOCIETY

The Chairman, Mr. Huo ShungHung, and his team of LIFE CARE SOCIETY in Kuching have been actively supporting local charity events. In 2019, they signed a memorandum of understanding with Malaysia's Academy For Silent Mentor to provide vehicle and manpower support for transportation purposes. They also collaborated in promoting the "Love.Silent Mentor" project in Sarawak state, raising awareness and understanding among local communities about whole-body donation. Their efforts have enabled the realization of the aspirations of whole-body donors and the dissemination of selfless acts of great compassion.

Palliative Center for Kuching Life Care Society

The Kuching Life Care Society's application for council approval for the proposed design of the Palliative Center was nearing completion in January 2021, with the architects and M&E engineers actively working on the project. It is anticipated that construction of the center will commence in March 2021, allowing for the establishment of a dedicated facility for end-of-life care.

The construction of the building, as shown in Figure 2, was underway in June 2023. It is anticipated that the hardware construction of the building will be completed by early 2024, and the occupancy license can be obtained by June of that year. This will allow the commencement of the interior renovation of the 58-bed facility. Recruitment and training of various personnel, including caregivers, managers, and cleaning staff, for the palliative care services will begin. By early 2025, the facility is expected to officially start its operations, offering comprehensive physical, mental, and spiritual care for residents in the palliative care ward, as well as providing daytime palliative care, educational outreach, and even post-mortem body preparation services.

2-UNIMAS

The Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), and our department signed a memorandum of understanding for academic collaboration in 2019. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the exchange activities between the two institutions has not yet to take place. During my sabbatical vacation, I made an informal visit to UNIMAS with the aim of reinitiating the exchange between our departments in the fields of human development, death education, and counseling psychology.
